这位通用汽车研究和开发部门前副总裁的这番话解释了最近受关注度颇高的两件事情：1）为什么Tesla开放专利可以加快汽车行业变革；2）为何Google无人驾驶车的面世让汽车公司忧心忡忡――因为这两家科技公司，正在将汽车作为整体进行研发和改造。

事实上，无人驾驶车的成功上路，可以追溯到2007年，当时只是低调地在美国的郊区地带进行的测试。但为何直到Google无人车面市前一直没有做任何的公开推广？

Lawrence给出数据称，在美国，汽车的平均使用率只有4%，每部车平均每天只开60分钟。但人们为这平均每天60分钟的使用率付出的代价却远远超过了实际使用率，从买卖车辆、汽油、保险已经催生了一系列大公司，形成了强大的利益高墙。Burns说：“大公司是不需要具有突破性。(Large company is not necessary to be disruptive.) ”Shift此前的稿件《汽车共享，不能只是看上去很美》也指出过，科技公司试图推广的汽车共享模式会减少社会车辆的购买，“每租出一辆车，路上就会减少15辆私家车”，这种益于社会资源分配的共享经济模式触碰了传统经济模式下很多公司的利益。

因此，汽车行业突破性的变革在Burns教授看来不会来自这个行业内部，而现在看来，最有可能是来自于科技公司。“今天他们售卖汽车、汽油和汽车保险，明天出售的将会是里程数、出行次数和体验。”

Google吸纳了Burns的这个“将汽车作为一个整体才能做出改变”的观点。该公司的无人驾驶车项目负责人厄姆森曾经在采访中回答为什么Google要开发无人驾驶车时，说道：“我们意识到要将项目做好，你就需要从头开始打造一款汽车。”这家科技公司巨头也是目前最适合做这件事情的人：Google地图现有的数据和其测绘能力，以及Google一直以来表现出来的开放态度，例如：在对无人驾驶车的研发过程中，Google一直以来也是开放他们的学习圈的。研究表明，大多数汽车的使用是进行1-2人在车内的旅行――这与现在大多数的汽车设计不符，也是Google想要改变，其无人驾驶车模型中体现出来了：Google不卖车，不要方向盘，也没有刹车和油门踏板，车内可以容纳两个人。

不过，这股来自科技公司对于汽车行业的冲击不仅仅是Google一家公司的角力战。除了通信公司会从中获得新机会，这个生态系统还有许多的空位值得创业公司思考和进行补位。比如，如何在人们避免使用手机的驾驶过程中，通过汽车和汽车之间的系统实现通讯？当无人驾驶汽车出现差池时，需要及时的支持服务，这可能是基于呼叫中心系统，如何改善这部分的体验？对于共享的汽车，如果优化基于实时地理位置的沟通信息流来节省汽车能源和使用者的时间？在现在的汽车使用中，1加仑汽油中，75%都没有发挥实际效用而是被浪费的，这提供了改善系统设计的机会，谁能抓住这样的机会？

福布斯一系列关于无人驾驶汽车的作者ChunKa Mui提出，无人驾驶汽车是在Google无人车带领下创造出来的一个全新的、价值3万亿的市场，而其中有2万亿仍然虚位以待。

无人汽车确实可以节省人们花费在通勤上的时间。Burns教授在密歇根大学带领的研究表明，如果一个人在美国赚取的是最低工资标准，那么用无人驾驶车代替人工驾驶，每开一公里能为他节省0.24美金；对于赚取美国工资中位数的人而言，每开一公里节省的时间转化为生产所产生的价值是0.83美金――但对于想为汽车行业带来革命性变革的科技公司，投入到这个市场中，并不能只看到这些“蝇头小利”。将Google的无人驾驶车包装成为具有科幻感的新兴科技产品，显然是搞错了方向――这并不是一些年轻热血的亿万富翁们造出来、为另一些千万富翁们服务的高科技大型玩具，好让他们在赶去一个又一个会议途中批阅文件处理公务的出行道具。

Burns说，未来汽车行业的几个关键词将会是“互联的，协作的，共享的，无人驾驶的以及量身定制的”。他还提醒所有想在这个巨大市场成形中抓住的机会的企业家和跃跃欲试的创业公司，“到底有一部无人驾驶车意味着什么？这是我们最值得思考和反复问自己的问题。汽车产业的发展进程如果加速一年的话，这个世界上就有100万人可以免于死亡的命运，即使只加速一天，也有3000条性命可以得救。这才是在汽车行业发展背后，我们该思考的终极图景。”

但这位无人驾驶车项目的顾问，却对这样的变化是否会发生在美国表示消极，“我相信真正的革新会在美国之外的什么地方起步。这个国家保护汽车行业建立起来的顽固法律体系是最大的障碍。”同时，他对PingWest说，他认为这些变化有一定的可能性发生在中国：在这里，汽车售价相对昂贵，还有一大部分人没有拥有自己的汽车，可以毫无障碍直接进入汽车共享时代。但他认为真正有希望实现这个愿景的，最有可能还是在欧洲。
